Context

Common Sense, in collaboration with the African Union Youth Division, engaged me to lead the instructional design and development of interactive eLearning content focused on youth community engagement and advocacy. The objective was to transform existing training materials into high-quality digital learning experiences suitable for scalable, self-paced delivery.

The project required close collaboration with multiple stakeholders and subject-matter experts, and demanded careful handling of policy- and advocacy-focused content to preserve its intent while making it genuinely learnable for a youth audience.

Challenge & Constraints

The available training materials existed primarily as static PDFs and PowerPoint presentations. While content-rich, they were not designed for online delivery and lacked the structure, interactivity, and instructional flow required for effective eLearning โ€” particularly for a youth audience engaging with advocacy and civic participation topics.

๐Ÿ“„
Existing content in static formats (PDFs and PowerPoints) not optimised for digital learning โ€” every module required structural re-design before a single interaction could be built.
โš–๏ธ
Need to preserve the integrity and intent of policy- and advocacy-focused material โ€” simplification for engagement could not come at the cost of content accuracy or political nuance.
๐Ÿ”’
Requirement to deliver interactive learning within an existing Moodle LMS โ€” platform constraints shaped authoring tool selection and activity design throughout.
๐Ÿ‘ฅ
Close collaboration with multiple stakeholders and subject-matter experts โ€” iterative review cycles had to be structured to avoid development bottlenecks.
โฑ๏ธ
Requirement for timely implementation without extending development cycles โ€” quality benchmarks had to be embedded in the process, not managed through extended revision rounds.
Decisions & Approach
01
Materials Analysis โ€” Objectives, Gaps & Interaction Opportunities
Conducted a detailed analysis of existing training content to identify learning objectives, structural gaps, and opportunities for meaningful interaction โ€” establishing a clear instructional blueprint before any development began.
02
Comprehensive Storyboarding for Advocacy Modules
Designed full storyboards for each youth engagement and advocacy module โ€” mapping screen-by-screen content, interactions, and assessment logic before moving into authoring, to keep development efficient and aligned.
03
Interactive Module Development โ€” Articulate Rise
Developed interactive, self-paced eLearning modules using Articulate Rise โ€” chosen for its structured layout model, which naturally supports the sequential logic of advocacy learning without requiring learners to manage complex navigation.
04
Interactive Activity Production โ€” H5P within Moodle
Produced interactive activities using H5P directly within Moodle โ€” adding scenario-based questions, drag-and-drop exercises, and knowledge checks that required active engagement rather than passive reading.
05
Implementation Support & LMS Deployment
Provided hands-on implementation support to ensure smooth deployment and integration within the institutional LMS โ€” including content testing, accessibility checks, and enrolment configuration before learner launch.
Outcome & Impact

The project resulted in a set of interactive, learner-centred eLearning modules that translated static training content into engaging digital learning experiences. The modules supported broader reach and consistent delivery of youth engagement and advocacy training across the African Union partner network.

Key Insight

Effective digital transformation of advocacy-focused content requires more than content conversion โ€” it demands intentional instructional design that balances clarity, engagement, and purpose.
